Masters in Statistical Practice FAQ

My undergraduate major is not statistics or mathematics. May I apply?

Yes, but it is crucial, that you have the appropriate statistics prerequisites.

What classes are a prerequisite for the MSP program?

Calculus based probability theory; Calculus based mathematical statistics; Regression analysis; Matrix algebra. 

Is there financial aid for the MSP program?

No. Qualified students may be eligible to be hired as graders or teaching assistants for the Statistics Department. 

How many students are admitted into the Master's in Statistical Practice Program each year?

There is not a cap on the number of students admitted. We are looking for students with the best background for our program.  Our target is around 20 students.

Is there a minimum required TOEFL score?

A desirable total TOEFL score is 100 or higher. Speaking TOEFL scores should be at least 20.

I am an international student attending a U.S. university. Can you waive the TOEFL in my case?

For international students who are studying at a U.S. university we require a copy of your old TOEFL score and a letter from an official of the U.S. university attesting to the applicant's English language skills, such as undergraduate classes taught, paper presentations, etc.

If the applicant does not have an old copy, the applicant should contact your U.S. university for a copy.

Is there a minimum GRE requirement?

We do not have a stated minimum GRE score. We are interested in the student's entire application package, including course work, experience, and recommendations. 

How many letter of recommendation do I need?

Three. 

A recommender can only submit a letter about me via the postal service or fax. Is that okay?

If that is the only option, that is okay, although not preferable. Have the recommender fax the letter to: 412-268-7828, or mail to: Master's in Statistical Practice Program, Dept. of Statistics, Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, PA 15213.

If I do not have all the required documents, may I still apply for admission?

You may apply, but your application will be considered incomplete.

I cannot pay the admissions fee by check, money order, or credit card. Are there other options?

We will accept cash, although we prefer not to. Cash can be lost in the mail. Once this transaction is completed, the information will be noted on your on-line application.

Is it okay if some documents are received by the admissions committee after February 15?

Only under extenuating circumstances.
