Proteomics is the next frontier in the rapidly evolving field of
bioinformatics. The course will provide an introduction to the principal aims,
technologies, and statistical issues arising in structural and functional
proteomics studies. Topics would include (1) An overview of experimental data
sources: X-ray, NMR, mass spectrometry (MALDI, SELDI, MS/MS), peptide arrays.
(2) Statistical problems in structural proteomics: molecular comparison and
database search, classification of structures, structure-based function
prediction. (3) Statistical problems in functional proteomics: fragment
identification, normalization and registration of spectra, peak finding, sample
comparison, classification and marker identification.
