Founded in 1966, Carnegie Mellon's Department of Statistics evolved in a university environment that emphasized computation, cross-disciplinary research, and the understanding of scientific principles through theoretical evaluation. This led the department to define a path for itself by focusing on:

• computational statistics;
• cross-disciplinary statistical research;
• statistical theory and methodology.

As all three of these areas became fundamental to statistics, our department assumed increasing leadership in the field. Today, our research interests are eclectic; however, the core focus remains the same. Our graduates are in high demand for jobs in academia, government, and industry.
