The Foundations of Statistics: A Vignette

James Robins and Larry Wasserman

This vignette reviews some issues in the Foundations of Statistics. Our review is very selective, with particular emphasis on the role of the likelihood and conditioning. Specifically, we review the likelihood principle, conditional inference and coherence arguments. We close with a brief look at some modern theory which examines the role of the likelihood principle in nonparametric problems.
