A sample questionnaire from one of our recent polls, conducted Jan. 16-20, 2003, follows. 1. Do you approve or disapprove of the way George W. Bush is handling his job as president? Do you approve/disapprove strongly or somewhat?
2. Do you approve or disapprove of the way Bush is handling:
a. The economy 3. Would you favor or oppose having U.S. forces take military action against Iraq to force Saddam Hussein from power? Would you say you favor/oppose military action against Iraq strongly or only somewhat? 4a. (HALF SAMPLE) Do you think Bush has presented enough evidence showing why the United States should use military force to remove Saddam Hussein from power, or would you like him to present more evidence? 4b. (HALF SAMPLE) Do you think Bush has or has not presented enough evidence to show why the United States should use military force to remove Saddam Hussein from power? 5. As you may know, United Nations inspectors are in Iraq looking for any evidence that Iraq has chemical, biological or nuclear weapons. Do you think Iraq is or is not cooperating with the U.N. weapons inspectors? IF YES: Do you think Iraq is fully cooperating or only partially cooperating with the U.N. inspectors? 6. Imagine the U.N. inspectors cannot find hard evidence that Iraq has chemical, biological or nuclear weapons. In that case, do you think the United States should or should not have to present its own evidence that Iraq has these weapons, before the U.S. attacks Iraq? 7. (IF SHOULD) What if presenting that evidence means the United States has to reveal sensitive intelligence sources - in that case do you think the United States should or should not have to present its own evidence that Iraq has these weapons? 7a. Do you think the United States should (set a time limit for the U.N inspectors) to finish looking for weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, or should the United States (give the U.N. inspectors as much time as they want)? 7b. (IF SET A TIME LIMIT) How long should the United States give the U.N. inspectors - a few more weeks, a few months, several months, or a year or more? 8. Which concerns you more: that the Bush administration (might move too quickly) to take military action against Iraq, or the Bush Administration (might not move quickly enough)? 9. Do you think the United States should work more on (trying diplomacy and negotiation with Iraq), or work more on (preparing for a military confrontation with Iraq)? 10. How much of a chance do you think there is that diplomacy and negotiation can resolve the problem with Iraq - is there a good chance of that, some chance, little chance, or hardly any chance? 11. How about in the situation involving North Korea - Do you think the United States should work more on (trying diplomacy and negotiation with North Korea), or work more on (preparing for a military confrontation with North Korea)? 12. How much of a chance do you think there is that diplomacy and negotiation can resolve the problem with North Korea - is there a good chance of that, some chance, little chance, or hardly any chance? 13. On another subject, do you support or oppose government and private programs that give women, blacks and other minorities preference over white men getting into college, getting a job, or getting a promotion? 14. Do you support or oppose government and private programs that give women, blacks and other minorities assistance - but not preference - getting into college, getting a job, or getting a promotion? 15. On another subject, do you favor or oppose the death penalty for persons convicted of murder? 16. Which punishment do you prefer for people convicted of murder: (the death penalty) or (life in prison with no chance of parole)? 17. (ASK IN STATES WITH DEATH PENALTY) As you may know, the governor of Illinois has changed the sentence of every death-row inmate in his state to life in prison instead. He said he acted because there were too many errors in death-sentence cases. Would you support or oppose it if the governor in your state changed the sentence of every death-row inmate there to life in prison instead? 18. On another subject, would you describe the state of the nation's economy these days as excellent, good, not so good or poor? 19. Do you think the nation's economy is getting better, getting worse or staying the same? 20. Do you think Bush's proposals on cutting taxes (favor the rich), (favor the middle class), (favor the poor), or (treat all people about equally)? 21. Would you support or oppose eliminating the federal income tax on stock dividends, which would reduce federal revenue by $360 billion dollars over the next 10 years? 22a. (HALF SAMPLE) As you may know, Bush has proposed cutting taxes by a total of 670 billion dollars over the next 10 years. What is your preference - (to have this tax cut), or (to have the federal government spend more on domestic programs such as education, health care and Social Security)? 22b. (HALF SAMPLE) As you may know, Bush has proposed cutting taxes by a total of 670 billion dollars over the next 10 years. What is your preference - (to have this tax cut), or (to have the federal government use the money to help balance the federal budget)? 23. In general, do you think this tax cut will be good for the economy, will be bad for the economy, or won't make much difference to the economy? 24. Do you personally own any stocks or stock funds that pay you dividends, not including any tax-exempt retirement accounts like 401(k)s? 25. Would you describe the economy in your state as excellent, good, not so good or poor? 26. As you may know, some state governments are facing budget problems that have forced them to raise taxes and reduce state spending on state programs and services. What about in your state: Is your state government currently facing budget problems, or not? 27. (IF YES AT Q26) Are these budget problems very serious, fairly serious or not too serious? 28. (IF YES AT Q26) How much responsibility do you think (READ ITEM) bears for the budget problems in your state - a great deal, a good amount, just some or hardly any? 29. On another subject, do you think abortion should be legal in all cases, legal in most cases, illegal in most cases or illegal in all cases? 30. Would you like to see the government and the courts (make it harder to get an abortion than it is now), (make it easier to get an abortion than it is now), or (leave the ability to get an abortion the same as it is now)? 31. The U.S. Supreme Court ruled in 1973 that a woman can have an abortion if she wants one at any time during the first three months of pregnancy. Do you favor or oppose that ruling? 32. I'm going to read some specific situations under which an abortion might be considered. For each, please say whether you think an abortion should be legal in that situation, or illegal.

IF YES: Do you think it happens often, occasionally, or rarely? 38. Have you personally ever felt that you were being discriminated against because of your race? IF YES: Has that happened often, occasionally or rarely? 39. (IF BLACKS IN COMMUNITY) Do you think that blacks who live in your community DO or DO NOT:
a. have as good a chance as whites to get housing they can afford 40. (IF BLACKS IN COMMUNITY) Do you think that black children in your community DO or DO NOT have as good a chance as white children to attend a good public school? 41. (ASKED OF BLACKS) Have you personally ever felt that (READ ITEM) just because of your race, or not? IF NOT: As far as you're aware, has that ever happened to a close friend or someone in your immediate family?

(ASKED OF LEANED DEMOCRATS) Suppose your state holds a Democratic primary or caucus for president in 2004 and the candidates are (Joseph Lieberman, Richard Gephardt, John Kerry, John Edwards, Al Sharpton and Howard Dean). For whom would you vote? Which one are you leaning toward right now? 46. Do you have a favorable or unfavorable impression of Al Sharpton?
