This dataset consists of quarterly sales of a well-known brand of a particular article of clothing at stores of a large national retailer. Even at the quarterly level, sales of a particular clothing brand, style, color, and size can be meager. In may quarters, there are no units sold at all. An example of a clothing article at this level of specificity is men’s Gold Toe “Windsor Wool Midcalf” black socks (which comes in only one size). The following sales data are for a clothing article other than socks, but it is of the same level of specificity. Retailers use this type of sales data to plan their inventory/order quantities.
These data are used in the paper "A Useful Distribution for Fitting Discrete Data: Revival of the COM-Poisson" by Shmueli, Minka, Kadane, Borle, & Boatwright (2003).
