Investigator Name: Bill Eddy, Justin Crowley (responses by Justin) Team Members: Gary Klein and Abby Fijas Project Title: Reducing Physiological Noise in Laser Scans of Neonatal Ferrets' Visual Cortex INTERACTION WITH TEAM * Was the frequency of meetings with the Stat Practice team about right? YES NO Yes - we held weekly meetings and a couple of times Gary and Abby came to my lab to observe experiments and discuss background. They clearly went above and beyond the call of duty. * Did the team make a genuine effort to understand your problem from your point of view, and translate it into statistical tasks? YES NO Yes - I was very impressed by their ability to jump between disciplines given their background. * Was the team able to translate the results of their statistical work into terms that are/were helpful to you? YES NO Absolutely - they always made the effort to relate their findings to biological events / data. * Did the team keep you informed of its progress? YES NO Yes - communication via weekly meetings and email was excellent. * Did the students accept your suggestions gracefully? YES NO Yes - it was clear that they wanted to learn statistical techniques AND make a contribution to my project. DOCUMENT * Do you have an acceptable final paper from your team? YES NO No - I don't believe I have seen a final paper, but I don't know what the protocol is for this. * Does the document achieve your goals? YES NO N/A * Are you satisfied with the document? YES NO N/A FINAL PRESENTATION * Was the team able to highlight the most important aspects of their work with you? YES NO Yes, I thought they did a great job. OVERALL * Would you comment on strengths or weaknesses you perceived in any member of the team you worked with? This was a very positive experience for me. I think we made rapid progress on a challenging analysis problem and I am satisfied with the outcome. It would be wonderful to have their continued involvement in the project. * Would you comment on any aspect of the design of the Statistical Practice course that you would like to see changed? It seems to work well as it is. Perhaps it could be expanded into a second (summer?) semester as an option? Collaborators such as myself make an investment of time in bring students up to speed. It would be great if we could increase our rate of return by extending the project if all participants are willing. =====================================================
