\opening{To Whom it May Concern:} I write in strong support of the selection of ### to Mortar Board. I have known Ms. ### for one semester, Fall ###, when she was a student of mine in 36-217, ``Probability Theory and Random Processes for Electrical Engineers''. This is a serious, briskly-paced calculus-based introduction to the theory of probability, with examples and applications in electrical engineering and computer science. Ms. ### was a stand-out student in the course. She obtained an average of almost 95\% on her homeworks in the class, midterm exam scores of 98\% and 95\%, and a final exam score of 96.5\%. She ranked first in the final semester standings for the class, out of approximately 130 students. Both the raw percentage scores and the high class ranking are to be commended; the electrical engineers and computer science majors that make up the bulk of the course enrollment are perhaps the brightest and most competitive science/engineering undergraduates at Carnegie Mellon. This is all the more remarkable as she was involved in CMU Varsity Volleyball at the time and had to miss several classes and reschedule midterm exams on that account. In addition to excellent scholarship in a large-lecture course that is frankly not well-geared towards encouraging such scholarship, Ms. ### is an extremely pleasant, well-rounded and mature student to work with. Several questions and points she raised throughout the semester, especially in email or on the class bboard, helped me to understand students' misunderstanding of the material that went beyond her as an individual. Working with her to reschedule her exams around Volleyball commitments was easy. In all of my interactions with Ms. ###---in office hours, after class, and at the end of the term---I have been very impressed. Given her scholarship and her evident good character, I think she is an excellent candidate for Mortar Board. Please feel free to contact me using the information in the letterhead if you have any questions or need additional information. \closing{Sincerely yours,}
