I. Find books and articles about MARS

  1. On the DeGroot Library web page, click on "Current Index of Statistics". (Note: with Unix Netscape you can click with the middle button to open CIS in a new window, allowing easier return to the DeGroot Library web page.)
  2. Under "Subjects" enter "MARS", then click "Submit".
  3. Optionally, use File/Print on the menus to get a printout.
  4. One entry is
    @article{lewi:stev:1991,
               Author = {Lewis, P. A. W. and Stevens, J. G.},
               Title = {Nonlinear Modeling of Time Series Using Multivariate Adaptive
                       Regression Splines (MARS)},
               Year = 1991,
               Journal = {Journal of the American Statistical Association},
               Volume = 86,
               Pages = {864--877}
           }

    To check where you can get a copy, return to the DeGroot Library page and select "DeGroot/CMU/JSTOR Journal Locator". You can see that 1991 JASA's are in the DeGroot Library, the CMU library at E&S (Hunt has issues before 1935), and in JSTOR.
  5. To get a copy from JSTOR, click on the JASA link under "JSTOR dates". Now click "Browse this journal", then "Vol. 81 - Vol. 90", then "Issue: 416, Dec., 1991, pp. 839-1163". Under "Nonlinear Modeling of Time Series Using Multivariate Adaptive Regression Splines (MARS), pp. 864-877", you can choose among "Citation / Abstract", "View Article", "Print", and "Download". For now, click on "View Article". By clicking on "Next Page", you can read the entire article.

    Printing can be a problem on some computers with insufficient memory, but the usual process is to click on "PRINT" in the frame on the left, and respond "OK" to the "Do you wish to print this article using PDF - high quality?" message. A new window titled "JSTOR: PDF file" appears; you can watch the progress of the file loading in the indicator at the bottom of the window. Next you PDF reader (usually Acrobat) pops up with the article loaded into it (if not, get help setting up a PDF reader for your web browser). Now use "File/Print" on the PDF reader to print your article, and then quit the PDF reader with "File/Exit". At this point a spare browser window (JSTOR: PDF file) will be visible; click on its "close this window" button.

  6. Note: you can get a more complete set of articles from CIS by entering "multivariate adaptive regression" (without the quotes) in the CIS Subject box.

II. Search for Books in the DeGroot Library

Using the "DeGroot Library Book Search" form at the bottom of the DeGroot Library web page, followed by clicking the "Submit Query Button", try these searches:

III. Find articles newer than those indexed in CIS

Click on "More Recent Journals", then use Edit/FindInPage on the browser menu (Alt-B for Unix Netscape). Try, e.g. "Markov". "More Recent Journals" is based on the journal lists Rose e-mails to us. It may not be a complete listing of all articles since the last CIS update.

IV. Look for a particular book

Lets try to find
@inproceedings{land:frie:1994,
           Author = {Land, Stephanie R. and Friedman, Jerome H.},
           Title = {Adaptive Signal Regression},
           Year = 1994,
           Booktitle = {ASA Proceedings of the Statistical Computing Section},
           Publisher = {American Statistical Association (Alexandria, VA)},
           Pages = {100--105}
       }
  1. One way to see if it is in the DeGroot Library is to enter proceedings AND 1994 into the "DeGroot Library Book Search" form. The result is "Sorry, no matching books found!".
  2. From the DeGroot Library web page, you can go to "CMU Library Catalog (Cameo)" to see if it is in a CMU library. In the search field box enter "Proceedings of the Statistical Computing Section" and click "Title". You can see that the ENGR&SCI Library has 1975 and 1978, but not 1994.
  3. Back at the DeGroot Library web page, you can go to "Pitt Library Catalog (PittCat)" to see if it is in a Pitt library. Click on "Connect to PittCat Library Catalog", the "Author/Title/Subject". Select "Title" and enter "Proceedings of the Statistical Computing Section" into the box, then click "Search". We see that years "1984-1986,1988-1991,1996" are available, but not 1994.
  4. Back at the DeGroot Library web page, you can go to "Amazon books", change "All Products" to "Books", enter "Proceedings of the Statistical Computing Section" into the box, then click "GO!". Click on the 1994 volume, and you will see a wishy-washy message that it "usually ships within 4-6 weeks".
  5. Back at the DeGroot Library web page, you can go to "B-N books", enter "Proceedings of the Statistical Computing Section" into the box, then click "SEARCH". It is listed as "not stocked".
  6. Back at the DeGroot Library web page, you can go to "DealTime", enter "Proceedings of the Statistical Computing Section" into the "Search For" box, then click "Search". Click on the 1994 match. (Note that there is a link to the ASA here.) Enter "Pennsylvania" as the state, and click "See Where to Buy". Several companies have matches, but none appear to have it in stock.
  7. Back at the DeGroot Library web page, you can go to "ASA Books", click "Conference Proceedings", then 1994. Now you can (finally) order the book, which is ISBN 1-883276-06-3.
  8. One last try: Click on "CMU InterLibrary Loan (PALCI)". Under "Patron Id:" enter your social security number, then click "Submit Input". Click on "Searching/Requesting". In the box labeled "Term" enter "1-883276-06-3", click "ISBN" and click "Begin Searching". There are no hits here either.
