Jacob Nayhouse, son of this unknown patriarch, wrote on his WWII draft registration the specific information that he was born in Sayney, Poland. This must be Sejny, in Suwalki, which is on the Lithuanian border.
The JewishGen Lithuania Database a couple of dozen entries in the "census" database ("Revision List") from 1816 to 1902 using transliterations such as Naygayz, Neygauz, Mekuz, and Nekhes, from the Kaunas and Vilnius regions. (Anna Reuben was from Vilnius.)
There are also entries on the tax and voter lists. The Kelme Database lists a family of 5 Neihauz's who were arrested in 1941 with birth dates from 1883 to 1923. There is a record of a Shimon Josel Neigauz who died as an infant in Zeimelis, Kaunas 4/11/1882 and was listed as "from Krukiai Community".
There are many matches in Poland, and one match in the Suwalki region for Izrajel Gdal Nejgauz in 1888. I have ordered this record.
