Vertical InteGration of Research and Education (VIGRE)

In the Department of Statistics at Carnegie Mellon University, the NSF-funded VIGRE program helps us to refine and extend the very best training in Statistics at the undergraduate, graduate and postdoctoral levels. Our approach integrates

  • Technical/theoretical expertise
  • Genuine collaborative research focused on important problems in science, engineering, policy and management
  • A fundamental commitment to strong teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels.

Our VIGRE program features training and mentoring opportunities across the department, through redesigned coursework at the undergraduate and graduate level, and through formal and informal mentoring and discussion group opportunities at all levels.

All trainees have the opportunity to integrate quickly into active research supervised by faculty throughout the department, either via faster pathways through required preparatory coursework for graduates and undergraduates, or through immediate integration into research projects at the postdoctoral level. The fact that VIGRE support is not constrained by research topic also means that trainees have the flexibility to revise and expand their research portfolios while they are here.

Finally trainees gain valuable teaching experience and training as undergraduate TA’s, as graduate TA’s and Associate Instructors, and as postdoctoral faculty-level instructors. Graduate and postdoctoral trainees are assigned reduced teaching loads during VIGRE support, to allow time for them to learn their various professional roles.

These are in fact the key elements of the approach to training that has evolved over many years at Carnegie Mellon: fast movement to substantial research activity appropriate to the level of the trainee, active supervision and feedback by regular faculty, and a strong commitment to integrating theory, application, and teaching/communication.

If you are graduating with a Bachelor's, Master's or Doctoral Degree in Statsitics or a related field and you are considering Carnegie Mellon for graduate study or a first faculty position in Statistics, feel free to browse the links at left to see what our VIGRE program is doing.  Contact the Department of Statistics for more information.

If you are an undergraduate interested in a summer or academic year research internship in the Department of Statistics, browse through our undergraduate pages and research projects pages at left. You may find a current project you'd like to apply for, or a vertically integrated research group you'd like to inquire about joining.

By law, VIGRE can offer monetary support only to US Citizens, US Nationals, or US Permanent Residents.  However, the vertically integrated research and education structure provided with VIGRE support is available to all.
