VIGRE Colloquia

In order to provide a forum for informal discussion of important topics of the day, and to help break down barriers between faculty, postdocs, and students, the Department of Statistics has mounted a series of "Teas" or informal colloquia, open to all in the department.

There are two separate series:  Teaching Teas and Research Teas.  They are usually held in the department lounge, or a conference room if more space is needed. Usually a speaker "sets the stage" and the remaining time is spent in informal discussion over cookies, coffee, soft drinks, and of course tea.

Some Recent Teaching Teas:

  • First Time Teaching Experiences of New Faculty
  • Updating 36-350 (undergraduate data mining course)
  • Undergraduate Courses: Recent Developments, Changes and Experiences
  • Which Statistics Are Students Learning?
  • Understanding the Millenials

Some Recent Research Teas:

  • Non-academic Jobs
  • Using the Department's Parallel Computers
  • Visit of Stacy Lindborg
  • Hi-Tech Tools for Research
  • SMARTS: Accelerating Microarchitecture Simulation via Rigorous Statsitical Sampling
  • Support Vector Machines
